Is My Child Ready for Piano?
I believe every child can benefit from piano lessons when the time is right for them. While we do move and play games for a part of each lesson, a child who is ready to focus on a task for a 10-15 minute stretch will be more successful in lessons.
Generally, age 4 is the youngest that I will accept in the studio. Before that, I highly recommend Kindermusik classes, which are a wonderful foundation for private lessons down the road, and a fun way to spend time together with your child.
If your child willingly sticks with something they enjoy doing (coloring, reading/listening to a story, building with blocks, playing catch, etc) for 20-30 minutes at a time, they may be ready for the level of focus needed for private lessons. Experience in a structured environment, like preschool, is also helpful.
Older beginners are often thrilled at how quickly they can begin making real progress at the piano. They will love to share their musical gifts with family and friends!
